Postoperative ileus is defined as malfunctioning of intestinal motility after major abdominal surgeries. It can be prevented by careful handling of tissues, minimal unnecessary adhesiolysis, laparoscopy, epidural analgesia, alternative analgesics and preoperative administration of µ-opioid receptor antagonists.
